With PHB Development, he has been involved in a number of market assessments related to branchless banking and innovative delivery channels in countries like Benin and Senegal (2017), Sierra Leone and Guinea (2016), and DRC (2014). Previously, Umberto spent two years in Northern Ghana (2011-2012), coordinating a value chain development project focused on connecting rural women involved in shea nut and butter processing with international markets through a combination of microfinance, training and ICTs. This project led to the successful set-up of a network of 5000+ shea women producers across 70 communities in Northern Ghana (Star Shea Network) and the spin-off of a social enterprise to continue working with the women after the project’s end (StarShea Ltd). As part of this assignment, Umberto led and coordinated a series of studies and evaluations aiming to design, roll-out and improve financial products and community-managed microinsurance funds for the women involved in the project, including techniques such as quantitative surveys, focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews and participatory rapid appraisals (PRAs).
Umberto holds a degree in Political Science from Sapienza University of Rome and a Master’s in Cooperation and Development from the Institute for Advance Study of the University of Pavia, Italy. He is fluent in English, French and Italian.
